EPE USA wins the 2020 WorldStar Packaging Awards – The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) recently selected winners for the 2020 WorldStar Packaging Awards, celebrating packaging excellence across a variety of industries and categories. In their 52nd year, the WorldStar Awards represent the pre-eminent international packaging competition and this year included 321 entries from all over the world vying for recognition in the realm of packaging design and technological advancement.
Excellence in packaging design
Every year, the WorldStar Awards celebrate distinction in packaging design, illustrating the state of the packaging industry and highlighting solutions that “create a living standard of international packaging excellence.” The WorldStar Awards are an all-star competition in which all entries must have previously won a national packaging competition in the last year. EPE’s Reusable Structural Transit Inserts (RSTI) achieved placement in the WorldStars after winning the AmeriStar Packaging Awards in 2019. As a result of the entry criteria, the contest presents a true snapshot of cutting-edge companies and designs all over the globe.

EPE USA wins the 2020 WorldStar Packaging Awards
This year, a panel of expert judges from the WPO met in Bali, Indonesia to select winning packaging solutions from a variety of categories. Our RSTI design was chosen in the category of Packaging Materials and Components. WPO judging focuses on a number of criteria, including product protection, ease of handling, production quality, cost reduction or economy of material, sustainability, and ingenuity of construction. Packaging designs are chosen by a consensus from the judges. They collectively determine that a winning solution is “superior to the other packs in its geographical market and category when it comes to performance and innovative design.”
The WPO will formally celebrate and announce winning companies at the WorldStar Packaging Awards Gala Ceremony on May 8, 2020, as part of Interpack Dusseldorf. WorldStar winners were announced earlier this month on their website, in addition to a brief explanation of victorious designs.
A focus on sustainability
The 2020 Awards included a special focus on sustainability, which provides insight into the importance of engineering environmentally sound packaging solutions for all companies looking to evolve to meet the demands of a changing consumer landscape. The criteria for entries included an emphasis on recyclability and environmental protection and winners overwhelmingly featured innovative concepts for improving the sustainability of traditional packaging.
The WPO also emphasizes material reduction in their judging criteria, which indicates a shift toward sustainability and an added focus on eliminating unnecessary waste from packaging supply chains. RSTI’s create a whole new meaning for material reduction – replacing bulky polystyrene blocks with 100% recyclable, optimized, and custom-fit molded polypropylene inserts, engineered with the exact right amount of material and placed at precise bearing areas to maximize protection.
